Gibsons recently completed a specialised mechanical upgrade for one of our long-standing customers at Bowraville Sawmill. The job involved the supply and installation of 23 meters of new hex track on an industrial carriage, along with the replacement of the carriage wheels to ensure smooth, precise operation.
Engineering & Coordination
Our team at Gibsons provided the custom machining of the hex track profile, ensuring tight tolerances and a perfect fit with the existing carriage system. The project demanded close collaboration between our engineering, machining, and installation team to deliver a seamless solution from start to finish.
Overcoming Site Challenges
One of the biggest challenges faced on-site was limited physical access around the existing equipment. This made removal of the old track and installation of the new track more complex than usual. Our engineering team developed creative, safe workarounds to navigate the confined space without compromising efficiency or safety.
Restoring Accuracy & Performance
The original track had become worn and uneven over time, leading to alignment issues and imprecise cutting. By replacing the full length of track and installing new carriage wheels, the carriage is now tracking perfectly straight and cutting to exact specifications. The upgrade has significantly improved both operational accuracy and overall system reliability.
A Legacy of Reliability
This project is another example of the multi-generational partnership between Gibsons and Bowraville Sawmill. Some of the sawmill machinery on-site has been in use for over 50 years—a testament to the durability and engineering quality of Gibson equipment. Maintaining and upgrading this machinery is essential to keep it running safely and productively.
The Importance of Regular Maintenance
Keeping track systems in good working condition is not just a matter of performance—it’s a matter of safety. Routine inspections, servicing, and timely replacement of worn components help avoid costly breakdowns and ensure machines are operating within safe parameters.

Quote from our customer Matt Dyer from Bowraville Sawmill:
“The effort and care from Phil, Blair & Isaac from Gibsons was great, they ensured we had minimal disruption to our operation and did this work over the weekend. It’s been quite an adjustment for our team operating the machine since the track upgrade, we had got used to the banging and grinding noises — it’s so quiet and smooth now! Great guys & a great result.” Matt Dyer, Director Bowraville Sawmill.
