Can AI Reshape the Manufacturing Industry in Australia?

manufacturing industry

In recent years, the Australian manufacturing industry has faced significant challenges, from global competition to supply chain disruptions. Amidst these challenges, artificial intelligence has emerged as a sign of hope, promising to reshape manufacturing in Australia. But how exactly can AI transform this sector, and what does the future hold?

Australia’s manufacturing industry has experienced a steady decline over the past few decades, largely due to offshoring and increased competition from countries with lower production costs. In response, many Australian manufacturers are seeking innovative solutions to boost efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.

Gibson machinery is widely recognised for its high quality, and built tough for long term reliability. In recent years we realised Gibson’s machinery needed to be smarter and more flexible to support the changing needs of our customers and their goals. That’s where automation and robotics has made an enormous impact on Gibson’s, and for our customers, making their operations more efficient, productive, and safe.

AI and evolving technologies have the potential to revolutionise manufacturing. Here are a few key areas where AI can make a significant impact:

  1. Automation and Robotics

AI-driven automation allows for the optimisation of production processes. Smart robots can perform repetitive tasks with precision, significantly reducing the likelihood of human error. This not only increases efficiency but also allows human workers to focus on more complex tasks, thus enhancing productivity.

Many of our Gibson machines and systems are focused on tasks that may be difficult, dirty, or dangerous to perform. Through automating those difficult tasks, it provides manufacturers an opportunity to redeploy staff onto higher value-add activities, increasing overall capacity and flexibility to address new customers and new markets. The benefits also flow into reduced WHS incidents, and more fulfilling work for your biggest assets – your people.

  1. Predictive Maintenance

One of the major costs in manufacturing comes from unexpected machinery breakdowns. AI can analyse data from equipment sensors to predict when maintenance is required, minimising downtime and saving costs. This predictive maintenance approach is already being adopted by some Australian manufacturers, leading to improved operational efficiency.

  1. Supply Chain Optimisation

AI algorithms can enhance supply chain management by predicting demand, optimising inventory levels, and identifying the most efficient logistics routes. This is particularly vital for Australian manufacturers, many of whom operate in remote locations. With AI, manufacturers can respond more swiftly to market changes, ultimately improving customer satisfaction.

  1. Quality Control

AI systems equipped with machine learning can detect defects in products far more efficiently than human inspectors. By analysing images and data, AI can identify inconsistencies, enabling manufacturers to maintain standards while reducing waste.

In Gibson’s very recent development, we engineered new machine learning AI based technologies to identify production issues and defects, and to improve the accuracy and efficacy of production processes. In a recent example we were able to use a smart sensor system to look for defects on products being processed at high speed (something that is very difficult for a human to see). The software was taught with examples of good and no-good products, and is now able to automatically identify the defects, and eject the bad products from the process.

  1. Customisation and Design

The ability to customise products on a large scale has become increasingly important. AI can analyse customer data to identify trends and preferences, allowing manufacturers to tailor their products accordingly. This flexibility can give Australian manufacturers a competitive edge in both local and global markets.

The future of AI in the Australian manufacturing industry looks promising and as AI technology continues to grow, the barriers to entry are likely to lower, making it more accessible for manufacturers of all sizes. By embracing AI, Australian manufacturers can enhance their competitiveness, drive efficiency, and ultimately secure a brighter future. New technologies such as automation, robotics, and machine learning AI, are key enablers for manufacturers to adapt quickly to the ever-changing world we live in.
