Gibson’s Engineering Manager Contributes to Safer Sawmilling Industry with Draft Code Now Open for Feedback

We’re pleased to advise you that an updated draft of the Sawmilling Industry Code of Practice is now out for public consultation. This important milestone is the result of hard work and expertise from across the industry.

Last year our very own engineering manager Richard Brown sat on a working group tasked with drafting the updated NSW Sawmilling Code of Practice. His deep knowledge of sawmilling operations, machinery risks and worker safety has helped shape a code that aims to better address the realities of the industry.

The new code of practice will help address a range of risks within the sawmilling sector from machine‑guarding and maintenance through to emerging technologies and operational practices. It reflects a growing recognition that smaller sawmills, in particular face unique challenges, and that today’s code needs to work for all sizes of operation.

DRAFT Sawmilling Industry Code of Practice

SafeWork NSW is asking for feedback on the draft code to ensure it:
• is relevant to the full range of sawmilling operations
• is easy for all workers and managers to understand
• supports current and emerging work practices and technologies

The public consultation process is open until Sunday 9 November 2025, and responses will play a vital role in ensuring the final code truly reflects the industry’s needs and protects both workers and the community.

We encourage all of you to take the time to follow the link, read the draft code, and provide your feedback via the survey. Your insights from the frontline are invaluable.

Thank you, and congratulations again to Richard for his contribution to making our industry safer.

Sawmilling Industry – Have your say.

Paul Harris General Manager
